Adult men and women over the age of 18 with a mental health diagnosis in need of less restrictive treatment may be interested in the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Riveredge Hospital.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 5 adults experience mental illness each year. Additionally, 1 in 20 U.S. adults develop a serious mental illness each year.
Also, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, close to 20 million people aged 18 years or older are struggling with substance use disorder. It’s also important to note that getting help for substance use disorder can also help improve long-term health.
This data shows that getting help for mental health, substance abuse, or both, is very important.
Located in Forest Park, Illinois, the outpatient programs at our treatment center allow for the flexibility to attend work and attend to other daily responsibilities while receiving meaningful treatment.
Adults transitioning from inpatient treatment, or managing symptoms to prevent hospitalization, may find our Adult Intensive Outpatient Program beneficial, as well. Participants benefit from a less intensive therapeutic environment in order to practice the tools, skills and education developed in other programs.
Our intensive outpatient program for adults includes cognitive behavioral treatment, like Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), to emphasize mindfulness, help regulate emotions and work toward distress tolerance.
This treatment plan also includes expressive therapies such as art, play, dance, movement and drama in order to offset our clinical treatments and heal more holistically.
The Adult IOP program meets year round Monday through Friday 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Studies from the National Library of Medicine suggest that the use of IOPs have comparable outcomes to inpatient treatment. In fact, when comparing substance use cases, every IOP studied showed a drop in alcohol and drug use after treatment — highlighting the importance of the continuum of care.
While not as intensive as inpatient treatment, an IOP provides many of the same tools, skills and education necessary to work towards recovery.
IOP also gives the patient the opportunity to receive care without needing around-the-clock care at our facility located a few miles west of Chicago, Illinois.
Riveredge Hospital also offers a treatment program for mental health and co-occurring substance use disorders. Co-occurring substance abuse and addiction treatment are treated separately from our IOP.
